The Sony DSC-W570 features the same sleek design although the key specs have been updated to include; a 16.1 megapixel image sensor, a longer 5x zoom (25mm-125mm coverage in 35mm terms) combined with Sony's optical Steadyshot image stabilizer, and in terms of video the camera provides for the ability to record 720p HD movies with sound (MP4 format).

Designed to appeal to those who are looking for a compact take anywhere type of camera that can easily fit in a pocket or purse while offering a range of user friendly features, the Sony DSC-W570 is available in stores for just under $200 Canadian - based on manufacturer's recommended retail price (MSRP).

The Sony Cybershot DSC-W570 incorporates a 2.7-inch 230,000 pixel LCD, which in today's market is considered fairly average for a camera in this class. The Sony Cyber-shot W-570 features a 16.1 megapixel Super HAD™ CCD image sensor providing lots of detail. With 16.1 megapixels, you can create photo-quality prints up to A3+ (13x19”) size, or crop your images and still come away with high resolution shots.

The 5x optical zoom provides a field of view from 25mm wideangle to 125mm at telephoto (in 35mm terms). The lens incorporates Sony's optical image stabilizer technology which assists handheld shooting in low light.

The On/Off and shutter release buttons are located on the top of the Sony DSC-W570, while the main controls and buttons are found on the back of the camera as shown below.

The top located zoom control lever is easy to operate by simply toggling back and forth with your thumb. Selecting the desired shooting mode is simple to activate by sliding the Still / Sweep Panorama / Movie mode switch found on the very left side of the camera right under the zoom control lever.

To play back an image or a movie you first press the camera's dedicated playback button, and then use the left and right positions on the 4-way push control pad to scroll through images.

In still shooting mode the 4-way push control pad provides control over the following settings:

The top position on the control pad (marked DISP.) provides control over the camera's LCD display settings. You can select to have the played back mage displayed with or without shooting information, and you can adjust the brightness of the screen display.

The right position offers options for selecting the desired flash mode. Available settings include; Auto, Flash on, Slow Sync or Flash Off.

The bottom position on the control pad is used to select and set Self-Timer settings. The choices include; a Self-Portrait and two person Self-Portrait mode where the shutter does not fire until a new face(s) is detected entering the frame. Standard self-timer settings include either a 2 sec or a 10 sec delay before the shutter fires.

The left position on the 4-way control pad is used to activate the camera's smile shutter function, which sets up the camera to take a picture when it detects a person smiling in the frame.

The Sony DSC-W570 also offers Blink warning technology that warns you when the camera thinks that a person in the scene might have blinked when the image was taken.

When the DSC-W570 is set to shooting mode, pushing the "Menu" button superimposes the camera operation menu on the LCD screen. The following options are available by scrolling down the menu;

• Shooting Mode: Select from Intelligent Auto (iAuto), Program (P) or Scene Mode (SCN).

Unlike traditional auto mode, Intelligent Auto (iAuto) mode thinks for you, recognizing scenes, lighting conditions, faces, and adjusts settings accordingly.

In Program mode although the camera still determines the exposure automatically, users have control of other settings such as ISO, Exposure Compensation and White Balance.

The Sony DSC-W570 features 12 convenient user selectable Scene modes. Choose the desired Scene mode (as seen in the above screen grab on the right) and the camera automatically adjusts settings to match the conditions.

Available Scene modes include: High Sensitivity / Soft snap / Landscape / Twilight Portrait / Twilight / Gourmet / Beach / Snow / Fireworks / Pet / Underwater and Soft Skin.

In Soft Skin scene mode for example, the camera recognizes skin tones and reduces the appearance of blemishes and wrinkles without affecting the rest of the shot.

When set to Hand-held Twilight Mode, the Sony DSC-W570 can capture six images in a fraction of a second with one press of the shutter, and combines the data from all six to create a single image with improved detail and lower noise. Intended for producing cleaner and sharper night shots while using a tripod.

• Easy Mode: In Easy Shooting Mode, easy-to-understand basic instructions are displayed on the LCD screen and the camera switches to all automatic settings, removing several function choices and allowing you to focus on just your subject.

This mode works together with Intelligent Scene Recognition which automatically detects eight different types of scenes and, within just 1/30th of a second, selects the appropriate camera settings. Recognized scenes include; Backlight, Backlight Portrait, Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Twilight using a tripod, Portrait, Landscape and macro.

iSCN has two modes: Auto and Advanced. In Auto Mode, the camera takes a single shot using the optimal settings. In Advanced Mode, the camera takes a photo with the optimal settings and, if in difficult lighting (low light or back light) immediately takes a second photo with another optimized setting so you can choose which to keep.

• Image Size: Select the desired image recording size.

• Continuous Shooting: Select from single frame or continuous burst mode shooting. The Sony DSC-W570 can shoot images at a rate of approx 1 rame per second at 16.1MP (Maximum 3 shots).

• Exposure Compensation: Adjust exposure by +/- 2 EV in 1/3 step increments (darkens or brightens the exposure).

• ISO Sensitivity: Select ISO settings from Auto (default) or manually set 80 / 100 / 200 / 400 / 800 / 1600 / 3200 ISO.

• White Balance (WB): The camera can automatically determine the WB (default) or users can manually set the WB from a number of WB presets.

WB options include: Auto (Intelligent) / Daylight / Cloudy / Fluorescent 1 (White Fluorescent Lighting) / Fluorescent 2 (Natural White Fluorescent Lighting) / Fluorescent 3 (Day White Fluorescent Lighting) / Incandescent / Flash / One Push. In a difficult lighting situation, One push allows users to take a WB reading based on the lighting source.

• Focus Mode: Focus Mode settings include 9 points AF (Under Face Undetected), Center Weighted AF or Spot AF for more precise focusing.

• Metering: Metering mode options include Multi Pattern (default), Center Weighted and Spot.

• Smile Detection Settings: The camera will automatically shoot when a smile is detected. Sensitivity options include; Big Smile, Normal Smile and Slight Smile.

• Face Detection: set Face Detection priority by choosing from Face Detection Off, Auto, Child Priority and Adult Priority.

• DRO settings: Dynamic Range Optimizer (DRO) Standard and Plus uses a sophisticated algorithm to help recover shadows and highlights. The result is more natural images with clearer details that more closely match what your naked eye sees.

DRO is particularly effective when shooting backlit portraits or any scene with a dramatic contrast between background and foreground lighting. DRO Plus allows for even greater optimization by analyzing each region of an image and performing additional image processing. Available DRO settings include: DRO Off, DRO Standard and DRO Plus.

The Sony DSC-W570 features a built in flash capable of providing illumination up to 3.7m (12 feet) in Auto ISO. The flash power extends up to 7.4m with ISO sensitivity set to 3200. Flash functions include; Auto, Fill Flash, Off, Slow Sync, and Red Eye reduction (emits a pre flash).

The Sony DSC-W570 can capture either 720p high definition (HD) or standard VGA video at a frame rate of approximately 30 frames per second with audio. Continuous recording is possible for approximately 29 minutes.

The maximum size of a movie file is up to approximately 2 GB. Movies are saved in the MPEG4 format. In movie recording mode there is a dedicated Scene mode for shooting movies underwater with an optional protective housing.

With the Sony DSC-W570's Intelligent Sweep Panorama mode you can have the camera automatically stitch together a series of images for an extra wide field of view as seen below. Simply activate the feature by using the shooting mode switch and press the shutter release while panning the camera from side to side or up and down.

The images that are stitched together are captured at lower resolution so there is some trade off in image quality when using this mode compared to shooting regular full size stills. The application is best suited for creating panoramic images for online use, including photo galleries, blogs and social networks.

The Sony DSC-W570 offers a number of playback functions. Playback can be accessed by pressing the dedicated playback button located on the back of the camera. Pushing the Menu button in playback mode provides access to a range of playback options.

The Sony Cybershot DSC-W570 is a compact camera that lends itself to family and travel photography. The camera is simple to operate and provides a feature set that is in-line with expectations for this type of camera.

Based on our tests with the Sony DSC-W570, the 5x optical zoom with Steadyshot optical image stabilizer delivers good center sharpness throughout the zoom range. Some edge softness is visible in wideangle images although this is fairly common to point and shoot cameras in this class.

The widest 25mm zoom setting does produce a fair amount of barrel distortion especially when shooting close to your subject, so if you are capturing close ups of people you are better off zooming in from a little further away.

The 9-point Auto focus system did a good job at maintaining focus for still image shooting, and the Sony Face Recognition system is very responsive and quickly locked in on faces in the scene. The metering system did a good job delivering well balanced exposures in general.

Taking advantage of some of the camera's built-in selectable scene modes and exposure compensation allowed us to compensate and get the desired shot that might not have been as achievable by simply using Auto mode.

The HD 720p video quality is pretty good although the camera did some focus hunting when using the zoom feature during recording. All in all within expections for this type of a camera.

We found the 2.7-inch LCD screen on the W570 to be adequate. The camera's monitor is not as high resolution as some competing models and does not offer a wide viewing angle which makes composing images from different angles (high / low) a little more hit and miss.

We found the menu interface on the Sony DSC-W570 to be intuitive and geared towards simple operation. Overall the Sony DSC-W570 is easy to handle and use, and in most cases delivers acceptable image quality for its class.

If you are looking for a user friendly, sleek and compact digital camera that can easily be brought along wherever your travels take you, the Sony Cybershot DSC-W570 is a decent option.

The reality is that this camera falls into an area of the market with a lot of competition. Sony DSC-HX100V with 30x Zoom and Swivel LCD

Sony has announced the Cybershot DSC-HX100V long range zoom digital camera with an impressive feature set. The 16.2 megapixel Sony DSC-HX100V with back-illuminated CMOS sensor sets itself apart from the competition with a 30x optical zoom providing a focal range from 27-810mm in 35mm terms, a large 3-inch high resolution 921,000 dot tiltable LCD display, a GPS tagging feature with compass, and offers full 1080p HD movie recording at 60 frames per second (fps) with stereo sound.

Additional headline features of the Sony DSC-HX100V include; an electronic viewfinder, manual exposure control (Manual, Aperture and Shutter Priority), numerous user friendly Auto Scene modes, an HDMI output connection to a TV or monitor and a high resolution panorama mode.

Create Personal 3D Content
Sony makes it easy to create personal 3D content that can be viewed on an HDTV with 3D home theater system. 3D images are captured using 3D Sweep Panorama? mode or the 3D Still Image mode. In this mode, the camera takes two consecutive shots in different focus positions to calculate the depths, and then it creates left-eye and right-eye images to produce a 3D effect. These images can be enjoyed in 2D or stunning 3D on compatible 3D televisions (3D-compatible HDMI? cables and 3D glasses are also required and are sold separately).

The 3D Sweep Panorama feature lets you take panoramic pictures in one press-and-sweep motion. The high-speed burst of frames is stitched together using innovative processing techniques to automatically create detail-packed 3D panoramas.

These 3D images can also be saved and viewed on a PlayStation3, using the ?Play Memories?? application software downloadable from the PlayStation? Network.

The new models will let you view images in a completely different way. Nikon D5100 SLR with Swivel LCD and 1080p HD Movie - Preview

April 5th, 2011: Nikon has today announced the mid range Nikon D5100 digital SLR camera, an update to the popular Nikon D5000. The Nikon D5100 fits between the entry level Nikon D3100 and the upper end Nikon D7000 SLR in the Nikon lineup. The D5100 is geared towards being more user-friendly like the D3100 while offering a range of more advanced features like the ones found in the D7000.

The Nikon D5100 incorporates a 16.2 megapixel CMOS sensor, similar to the one found in the D7000, and offers a versatile 3-inch high-resolution 921K dot swivel and tilt LCD screen for shooting stills or capturing movies at unusual angles. The camera also offers an airflow control system and a sensor cleaning system to minimize the effects of potential dust.

The D5100 can capture 1080p HD movies at 30 frames per second in the AVCHD format (MOV file), and offers a built-in mono microphone, while also providing a connection for an external stereo microphone like the new Nikon ME-1 (optional) announced today.

Additional headline features of the Nikon D5100 include; a 420-segment 3D Matrix metering system, 11-point 3D autofocus tracking, up to 4 frames per second continuous shooting, ISO boost up to 25,600 ISO, full manual or user-friendly 'Scene' modes, new in-camera Image Effects, in-camera image editing and the inclusion of Nikon's Scene Recognition System. The Nikon D5100 captures 1080p full HD movies with full-time autofocus and manual exposure control. Users can quickly switch focus modes to stay with the action through a variety of AF functions, including face priority which can track up to 35 human faces, subject-tracking and normal or wide-area autofocus. To activate D-Movie mode and Live-view, a new switch is ergonomically located on the top of the camera near the shutter button for easy access.

The D5100 D-SLR offers variable frame rates and resolutions for movies, and can record 1080p at a cinema-like 24 or 30fps, or a web-friendly 720p resolution at either 24 or 30 fps for up to 20 minutes per clip, in the AVC-HD H.264 codec. New ME-1 Microphone
To address the needs of the ever growing community of shooters abandoning their video cameras for the versatility of a D-SLR, Nikon now offers the ME-1 stereo microphone. Engineered specifically for a D-SLR, the new ME-1 microphone attaches to the hot shoe and has noise dampening components designed to minimize noise resulting from AF operation.

The microphone also has a low-cut filter to reduce wind and other noise not already blocked by the wind screen. Designed with D-SLR users in mind, the ME-1 is powered through the camera, and also features a cable stop to keep the cable out of the way when using the camera, and reduce instances of noise from unintentional contact.

Because it utilizes a standard 3.5mm stereo jack, the ME-1 is ideal for the D5100 and other Nikon HD movie capable D-SLR’s such as the D3s, D300s, D7000, as well as the COOLPIX P7000 and any other camera with a 3.5mm stereo input jack.

Price and Availability
The D5100 D-SLR camera will be available throughout the United States beginning mid April 2011 at an estimated selling price of $799.95 for the body only, and $899.95 for the body and lens outfit that includes the AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens. The new Nikon ME-1 microphone will be available in April 2011, and will retail at an estimated selling price of $179.95 US.
